The School Employees Retirement System of Ohio Campaign

Making smart health care choices

Welcome to ‘Choosing Wisely’

It is common to have tests ordered when you visit your doctor.  However, how do you know if they are necessary?  As you become responsible for more of the cost of your health care services, you want to know you are paying for the services you truly need.

According to the Institute of Medicine, up to 30% of health care spending in the United States is unnecessary.  Some tests and procedures are overused and duplicate one another.  In some cases, they even carry risks that could be harmful to you.

Choosing Wisely gives you tools and resources to help you talk to your doctor about the tests and care options that are right for you.

Choosing Wisely was founded by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation.  It contains recommendations from more than 50 physician specialty societies such as the American Academy of Family Physicians.  Filled with articles and videos to help you learn and make good decisions about your health, this free resource can help you make smart use of your SERS health care coverage.
