The Choosing Wisely New Mexico Campaign

Doctors and patients partnering for better care and reduced costs

Welcome to The New Mexico Coalition for Healthcare Value’s partnership with Consumer Reports

The Institute of Medicine estimates that approximately $750 billion, 30% of healthcare spending, is wasted on unnecessary, often harmful tests, treatments and procedures. Meanwhile, it is estimated that 40 percent of Americans don’t get the right care. It is important for patients and their physicians to engage directly about appropriate use – choosing care that is supported by evidence, not duplicative of other tests, free from harm and necessary.

Choosing Wisely, an initiative of the ABIM Foundation, helps patients and physicians engage and dialogue about the overuse of tests and procedures and supports physician efforts to help patients make smart health care choices.

The Coalition has partnered with Consumer Reports, the nation’s leading expert, independent, nonprofit consumer organization, which is working with the ABIM Foundation to provide resources for consumers and physicians to engage in these important conversations. Through this partnership, our members have access to downloadable patient-centered content that will assist their employees in discussing appropriate care with their doctors. Click on the Choosing Wisely tab to view or download the content you are interested in. Some content is also available in easy-to-read and Spanish versions. And, check back as content will be added and updated in the future.

Patients can be safer, save money, avoid hassles and get well sooner if they engage in their health care and become partners with their providers.

Consumer Reports is partnering with employers, associations, medical groups, Coalitions and health care advocates to distribute the best available information about doctors, hospitals, treatments, drugs and preventive health strategies. With this information, millions of Americans will make smarter health care decisions for themselves and their families.

Choosing Wisely

Choosing Wisely is a campaign intended to help doctors and patients avoid unnecessary, often even harmful procedures. ABIM Foundation and many medical specialty groups have created the lists of avoidable procedures. Consumer Reports has in turn created these patient-centered reports.
