Choosing Wisely: Informed patients make smarter healthcare choices

Did you know that roughly 30% of health care spending in the U.S. is wasted on unnecessary services, including some that may not improve people’s health? When it comes to health care, more is not necessarily better. In fact, some care can actually be harmful.

  • Do I need an MRI or CT scan to help treat my back pain?
  • Are brain scans helpful is diagnosing a concussion?
  • Will antibiotics help me recover faster from sinusitis?
  • What happens if I do nothing?

The answers to these questions may surprise you! That is why the Lehigh Valley Business Coalition on Healthcare (LVBCH) partnered with Consumer Reports to provide answers these questions and many more through the Choosing Wisely® program. Choosing Wisely is a national program, sponsored by the ABIM Foundation that encourages patients and doctors to talk together about the necessity of various medical tests and procedures. To support this program, Consumer Reports created educational brochures and videos that identify hundreds of tests, treatments and procedures to avoid.

From this website, you can access more than 100 guides to getting better, safer, more cost-effective care. These reports, in PDF format, are free for you to read, download or print for your individual, company and/or family use. Most reports also are available in Spanish or plain English versions. Employers have an important role to play in healthcare since 75% of employees use their employer as a primary resource for medical and health information. We encourage you to share this important information with your family, friends, co-workers and colleagues.
